Women's wrestling

Hand-fighting, before the story starts

Two ties and a step. The bout people remember usually began half a minute earlier.

Two women wrestlers in a simple collar tie, hands on the upper arms.
Technique

Women's wrestling at the senior weights is freestyle. The hands are not a preface to a men's sport. They are the sport, with their own history of who is willing to hang in a tie and who would rather clear it and move.

Watch the thumbs. A thumb that sits on top of the arm is posting. A thumb that slips under is already looking for the wrist. The photograph on this page is a plain collar, on purpose. Complicated grips hide bad anatomy and, more often, hide the idea. The idea is simple: one athlete is settling, the other is about to leave.

At 57 kilograms the room has been crowded for years. You do not need a seeding sheet to see it. You need the first tie. If both athletes are happy there, the bout will be a clinch. If one of them hates it, you are about to watch a shot, or the sale of a shot.

Nothing here identifies a final. The still is a study, not a documentary frame of a named match. When a public cut belongs on this page, it will name the athletes. Until then the hands are enough to practise on.
