Hands

The wrist, before the elbow joins in

Most ties are decided at the wrist. The elbow is just where the argument becomes visible.

One hand closes around another wrestler's wrist.
Technique

Coaches say 'hands' and mean a whole sequence. Start smaller. One hand, one wrist, the thumb across the back of it. If that grip is real, the elbow has to follow or the grip breaks. If the grip is polite, nothing else in the tie is worth trusting.

Freestyle uses this to set up a level change. Clear the wrist and the shoulder drops. Greco uses the same inch for the opposite reason: keep the wrist so the underhook never quite arrives. Same joint. Two sports.

On film, the useful frame is rarely the throw. It is this one, a second earlier, when you can still count the fingers and see who owns the wrist. If you cannot tell, you are watching the finish you expected. The finish will lie to you.
