Weight classes, Olympic and otherwise
Six golds a style at the Games. More weights at a world championship. The map, without the myth of the cut.

Senior wrestling is split by weight so a bout is a meeting of styles, not of sizes. The Olympic Games use six weights in each discipline. World championships keep those six and add weights between them. An athlete can be a world medalist at a kilogram that will not exist at the Games. That is why a ranking and an Olympic plan are different documents.
Olympic weights
| Discipline | Weights |
|---|---|
| Men's freestyle | 57, 65, 74, 86, 97, 125 |
| Greco-Roman | 60, 67, 77, 87, 97, 130 |
| Women's wrestling | 50, 53, 57, 62, 68, 76 |
Eighteen golds. That is the Olympic programme. At the world championships you will also see weights such as 61, 70, 79 and 92 in men's freestyle, in-between classes in Greco-Roman, and 55, 59, 65 and 72 in women's wrestling. They are full world titles. They are simply not on the five-ring poster.
Why athletes move
A crowded Olympic class pushes people toward a neighbour, or the other way when a place is available. When we write that someone is at 74, we mean the class they entered. The piece on making weight says what this desk will not do, which is romanticise a cut or publish a method.
Women's 57 has been the crowded room in recent cycles. The desk note is the sporting version. This page is only the numbers. Numbers are enough, if you are trying to understand why a world champion at 59 kilograms is not automatically an Olympic favourite at 57.
How to read an entry list
A name next to 74 means that athlete entered 74 for that meet. It does not mean they will be at 74 in Las Vegas in 2027, and it does not mean the world title they won at 79 was a rehearsal. Keep the two documents separate. One is the Olympic six. The other is the world-championship list, which is longer and, in a non-qualifying year, the more complete picture of who is actually good.
When two athletes from the same country appear at neighbouring weights, you are usually looking at a selection argument that already happened. The public part is the bracket. The private part, who was told to move, is not something this page can know. Do not invent it from the kilograms.
If you are new, memorise the Olympic six in the style you watch most. The rest can stay on this page until a bout forces you to look them up. Eighteen golds at the Games. More than that at a worlds. That difference explains half of the confused previews this magazine exists to avoid.
