Las Vegas, and the last year that still feels wide open

The U23 worlds are not a junior photocopy of the senior meet. They are where a style gets found out.

The U23 world championships open in Las Vegas on 12 October. A week and a bit later the senior meet starts in Astana, and the longer headlines will follow the older athletes. That filing system undersells Vegas. An under-23 field already includes people who medal at senior level, and people who will never get that close again.

The bouts worth staying for are the mismatches of experience. A senior medalist against someone who has never had to manage a six-minute international final. The younger athlete often owns the scramble. The older one usually owns the minute after a failed attack, which is a different skill and a less photogenic one.

Freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling are all on the programme. Treat them as three sports that share a venue. A gold in one does not explain a gold in another. It barely explains next year.

A U23 title is not a reservation for 2028. It is evidence that a style survived a full bracket.

NVWF will write Vegas as its own meet. If you want the dates and the city in one place, they are on the event page. If you want to know why an under-23 loss can still be the most useful match of a career, watch the loser in the next tournament, not the podium shot.

There is a temptation to scout. Every promising twenty-year-old becomes a paragraph about Los Angeles. Some of them will be there. Most of the useful information in Vegas is smaller. Can they wrestle the second period when the first idea is gone. That question does not need 2028 to be interesting.

Under-23 brackets also punish a style that only works against teammates. International hands are less polite. A tie-up that felt controlling in a national camp can be a donation once the other athlete has seen it twice. The athletes who look composed are often the ones who have already lost a final somewhere and rebuilt the entry. Composure is usually a scar.

If you are choosing between the U23 session and a senior preview show, take the session. The senior names will still be there in Astana. The twenty-one-year-old who figures out a passivity minute in public might not be this readable again.
